You may not think that the rug you walk on everyday in your home has a long and lively history, but in actuality, rug tapestry has been a vital part of the heritage of many cultures. Instead of using your Oriental area rug as a showpiece on your floor, why not try hanging it for maximum effect on your walls?

Chinese silk rug weaving began thousands of years ago, and many of the beautiful works of art have survived over the years. Currently hung up and displayed in museums across the world, Chinese rug tapestry is priceless artwork that has never meant to be stepped on.

Over the centuries, other countries used rug tapestries as wall hangings. Throughout Europe, priceless rugs were hung on walls to keep drafts at bay in castles. Often rugs were commissioned to display the family coat of arms. Much the same as a painting, rugs were also a means to display a significant piece of family history.

Getting Started

First, decide exactly what you are trying to achieve in your room. Is it a modern room with contemporary accents? Do you have a space that is meant to display your antiques? Is the room you are decorating a nursery or child’s room? Your choice of rug will depend on these factors.

A room that holds your cherished heirlooms will benefit greatly from an Oriental area rug on the wall. A modern space would look all the more stunning with a geometric area rug on the wall. Your child’s room can have added visual impact from a kid’s themed area rug, such as a collage of dump trucks or a beautiful flower.

Depending on the size, shape, and style of your area rug, there are a few options for hanging it. Smaller, lighter rugs can be hung with a rod. Turn the rug over and determine which end you will have as the top. Precut some heavy fabric to use as a pocket for the rod, and sew it along the top edge of your rug. You may wish to go over the stitch a few times for maximum strength.

Rug Hanging Hardware

Purchase a rod that you would use for a curtain, and pass it through the pocket you created on the rug. Use brackets to attach to the wall, and hang as you would hang a photo. Heavier area rugs, such as Persian or Oriental, require a stronger attachment in order to hang them properly.

You will need to sew sections of fabric onto the back of the rug and affix large rings onto the back. Each section will require a wall bracket that is drilled into a stud beam in your wall. Never hang your rug with nails and hammer it straight into the wall. You will tear it when you attempt to remove it and your rug will be irreparably damaged.

Be careful to avoid hanging your area rug in direct sunlight, as this may cause the rug to fade over time. Although the rug you hang may not be a priceless Chinese tapestry, you can achieve a beautiful effect for your walls by displaying your favorite area rug.
