These handmade rugs originate in the mountainous regions of Tibet, and their style is distinct and desirable.  The patterns and colors that are knotted together make Tibetan rugs really luxurious.  In Buddhist culture, Tibetan rugs are mainly used for meditation.  They are also used to cover doors, windows, beds, as well as saddles for horses.  A few different types of Tibetan rugs are:

  • Dragon Rugs
  • Floral Rugs
  • Tiger Rugs
  • Vajra Rugs

While the unique styles of Tibetan rugs are rich and elegant, you won’t see many average classed homes with these types of rugs.  More and more people are starting to purchase these luxurious rugs, but many higher classes families are using them for the royalty that they bring into their homes.

How are Tibetan rugs made?

Very interestingly, each Tibetan rug is carefully handcrafted using Tibetan knots, traditional rug knots, or a combination of textile weaving methods.  Each rug is hand-backed by cotton or wool fabric, and the knots are pulled through and snipped, which allow each rug to vary in length.  Tibetan rugs use the finest natural silk fiber, as well as softly refined wool, ensuring a cushiony feel to it.  The natural fibers (wool, cotton, and silk) provide the softest rug feel you’ve ever experienced.

Most area rugs are created using the same techniques, so it’s no surprise that hand-knotting was used, but the combination of hand-knotting and hand artistry/patterns put this type of rug in a totally different category.  Many “Oriental” styled rugs like to explore traditional ornate designs, but Tibetan rugs use a different approach, they take the most unique symbols and use them in their styles, which is something many other types of rugs don’t do.

As explained above, rugs that have an image of a dragon on it is surely of “Oriental” descent, it’s just something that normally wouldn’t be placed on an area rug.  Other symbols that are used on Tibetan rugs are:

  • Plants with heavy symbolic meaning (Forsythia, Plum Blossoms, etc)
  • Certain types of trees
  • Vines

If a person was to walk into a rug and carpet store, one would assume that at first glance, they’d think a Tibetan rug style is fairly modern and casual like many other types of rugs, but taking a closer look at these unique area rugs will certainly allow you to get a “better” look at them.  Tibetan rugs have a refined sense of antiquity that makes them totally appealing to any person.  The price however might not be too shabby.  This is why they are mainly shown in wealthy homes.

Tibetan rugs aren’t only used for show; they are also a great collector’s item, since there is a multitude of styles.  If one were to act right now, they could invest in these rugs, and eventually they would make a pretty penny.  The values of these rugs are going up, so jump on the bandwagon while they are still at a reasonable price.

Whether you buy a Tibetan rug as collectors item or for your home, they are worth every penny.

All in all—a person is going to purchase a rug because they want to add beauty, uniqueness, and style to their home.  Why wait any longer?  Purchase a lush Tibetan ‘area’ rug today so you can fit in with royalty.  You will be glad that you did.
